Let's watch this!

                                     wORLD oF mAKE bELIEVE

'Somebody tore my world apart and put it back together

Somebody tore my world apart and put the pieces back the wrong way'

A World Of Make Believe was basically done with the help of an acoustic guitar and a slow, but urging drumloop with a sort of hiss in its mix. Lyrically I had the word fake in my mind, as I regularly have lately, when I read the news. Make believe. Create your own reality or bubble and watch what happens to the sheep when you spread the word. A sinister and hypnotic tone of voice. You can hear that in the way I sing, I even almost rap or narrate the words. The chorus is more melodic with a latin feel around it for some contrasting relieve.

Smart (watch 2)

While waiting on that new release, why not watch at another DIY video with lyrics included?

Smart, a song about cocky behavior that's a big part of the political world and social media in our society, takes you on an infectious, groovy, funky trip and ends on the top of that neverlasting, melting iceberg.
Picture of me throwing stones: Yola

Are you smart? (you can sing the words too)

From the new JoosTVD album: Doesn't Ring A Bell, release 2-5-2020.

One week from now, you can hear the rest.
In the meantime, check smart Spotify

Let Us Hear/Watch A New Tune! (Promo 2)

To wet your appetite further, to get you involved with the new stuff, I want you to....behave. Well sort of. Second promo from the new album of JoosTVD: "The Fly On The Wall Routine", release 30th april 2019.
As a former drummer, I am always inspired by rhythm patterns from all over the world. There'a a syncopatic afro/latin-funk beat that's inspired this song. All the harmonies in the chorus are afro inspired. Instrumental arrangements, like the piano motives are more latinesque. Think "Talking Heads" Remain in Light's hypnotic feel. The lyrics: they have a serious and self-reflecting side: how to "behave' normally these days. Sing along! ("hey ya hey ya nanana") Behave...just like I do!

Watch promo 2:

Behave [Lyris/ Music: JoosTVD]

Larry likes to scream for hours
Fergie likes to eat the flowers
(Hey ya hey nanana)

There's a fire in my kitchen
A little murder on the floor
Nothing beats this witching anymore
I can't control my urges
Life's too easy in my court
And after all these purges I get bored

As long as you behave
(As long as you behave just like I do
And if you won't behave than I won't too)
Nothing will be happening to you
Behave just like I do I do

Hey ya hey ya nanana
Hey ya hey ya nanana
Hey ya hey ya nanana
Nothing will be happening to you

Hey ya hey ya nanana
Hey ya hey ya nanana
Hey ya hey ya nanana hey!

I see a bubble when you babble
The struggle when you slip
Who cares about the hassle when you're hip?
You cannot lose your temper
So you better sell your soul
And you can love me tender
Or not at all

As long as you behave
(As long as you behave just like I do
And if you won't behave than I won't too)
Nothing will be happening to you
Behave just like I do I do

Fergie likes to eat the flowers
Larry likes to scream for hours
Let me walk you through the papers
Maybe if I see you later

Hey ya hey ya nanana
(Hey hey hey)
Hey ya hey ya nanana
(Hey hey hey)
Hey ya hey ya nanana
Let me walk you through the papers
Hey ya hey ya nanana
(Hey hey hey)
Hey ya hey ya nanana
(Hey hey hey)
Hey ya hey ya nanana
Maybe if I see you later

Feed me!

Hai folks! It's a very beautiful day up here in the lowlands, a very welcome spring sun shining through. It all sounds just like music to me... just one week and ....12 songs will be caressing your ears...or not!
Here's a little update, just before I'll release a second promo.
As I've released my first promo (Fly Talk) into the world, my curious eyes are always wondering how people react to my new ditties. I'm not interesting in millions of listeners, quality counts in the end my friend. The song has already been picked up by a few online radio stations now. One of them is this young, music platform (Drooble) for musicians, listeners, sharing insights and giving feedback to eachother. And there are the charts, not to be taken all that serious, mmm... or do we?
I hope I'll get a few reviews for the new album too in the future, it's so gratifying, so any support (reader can you write?) on that is welcome!

Let Us Hear A New Tune!

Here it is then. A new promo for both the eyes and the ears. Not that I'm not a professional video wizzard, but if I've gotta show something I'll do it the DIY way. All you need is dancing shoes and a grooving smile.

What do ya think? To me, this is just a simple, carefree and upbeat, funky tune from a restless guy that loves to dance but shyness holds him back.... Marvin Gaye wrote an irresistable dance song about that (Got To Give It Up) to keep up with the disco rage in 1977.
O, but I loved creating this little dittie.I wrote this very quick with a sort of naive confidence. All it took was a ball of spontanious energy. that you can't buy anywhere.
Well, I'm getting a little stiff maybe in the hips, but don't dare me! I'm not trying to grow up, that's all. Not now! Love life all over again.
Dancing freely can surely help to reduce the age problem. Stay a kid. Love the rhythm of life. So many ways to do it!

Promo "Not Now" from the brand new 2018 album "Just Say KNOW"

Lyrics/ Music (JoosTVD)

Not Now

One day I'll be a big boy
But not now, not now!
I want to have fun
With my new toy

Just let me move
Move me to the rhythm of your life

One day I'll get my act together
But not now, not now!
I never fellt better

Just let me move
Move me to the rhythm of your life

Focused monk

Hai there folks!
Today, as usual, I'm gonna work on my latest stuff again. Listening attentively like a lonely, but dedicated and focused monk minus the bald crown of course. Keep it cool, will ya?
I'd like to share some of that stuff which has helped me through years of struggling in my homestudio. For those who are looking desperately for those educational video's about mixing and mastering and of course there's absolutely much more. Give me those links and I'll add them.
Mostly presented by the professional audio nut and mostly done in Pro Tools with the basic stock plugins to enhance your audio a "little" to make it more "audible".

Mixed Up

So...I'm in the middle of these final mixes. Thoughts are racing all the time: "don't mess with a good thing!" The choices I've made are more or less definite. I mean, the intensity and the emotions (FEEL) of the "first take" makes it mostly the best one to go for. Both the organic energy and the freshness of a new song motivates that. Sure there are the unavoidable overdubs and edits to be done later (only in case if there are disruptive mistakes, all in the name of smoothing it all out).
I've got a lot of ideas while arranging and recording a song. Those filling intervals, melodies come from the piano mostly. Some even counterpoint perfectly with eachother. And sometimes you have to choose, wipe away what's getting in the way.
Every song has got its own personal handling of course. After a few weeks of self-imposed distance I've listened again with "new" ears. Aha. Yes, that distance helps to be more objective about the sound, especially if you work alone (!). Watched a few youtube tutorials of generous sound engineers again to learn more about their professional mixing methods. Let's get it on.

My method? The "meth" method.

Ok, I need some more distance perhaps haha....CU!

Let me hear/see THE Promo video!

Ok, ok. Not only you can hear it, there's something to watch by.
When everything goes as planned, the new album "Open Up My Parachute" will arrive globally around 4 april on the usual streaming services, like Spotify, Deezer, iTunes, Amazon. Links will follow ASAP. Fingers crossed, legs necked!

So no better way than to start off with THE promo:

Inspiration for it aka who is this "Chalky"?

What you hear is the song that opens the album: Chalky. The supporting promo video shows all the pictures that have been involved with the artwork. You can see the changes in design, colour, fonts. Yes, it's all in a lowbudget DIY way that keeps it personal and what drives me to do it like this.
My rhythmic side pushed forward and I seem to use each frame as a rhythm response to any accent in the music. Well, it's a funky track so I had to.

Who is this... "Chalky"? It's inspired by that afro-american guy, who played this cool, smooth survivor in the thrilling TV series Boardwalk Empire. Chalky (White), a ironic nickname. I liked the sound of it and it fit perfectly with this "dangerous" groove I've been working on.
Enjoy!

This not THE promo!

Well, curiousity killed the cat. Went out for a lunch after mixing and mastering the latest tracks. Someone (me), sneaked into my studio, sniffed around and touched my jewels! All captured (me) on tape. (me) Hit some forbidden bar and some song (from me) starts playing...at the wrong speed. Better not watch. Yet. Don't-do-it. Don't! Wait for the real one.

I've warned you, didn't I? It's gonna be allright. Soon...soon!

Yes, use my song!

Once in a while I come across "JoosTVD" songs supporting videos on youtube that really take me by surprise. Some of these songs are 10 years old! I've got nothing to do with these promo videos, but it's nice to see what other people add to to what once was an idea popping out of your head and pooring out of your fingers...so a few here to illustrate that.

Another one on a spanish documentary site: WALK BY THE EXHIBITION 'EXCRETA. AN EXPOSITION

Songs used in the video's are: Bomber Drone, Shark In The Disco, Circus Monkey, Sow Motion Dream, Stupid Song(s), Tweet.

Ps. (alert! commercial intermisssssssion) Need some of my music? I've got two instrumental albums "For Your Pleasure 1 & 2" on Jamendo readymade, waiting to inspire you!

Rock'n Roll Me In...Or Out!

Hai folks of the flat earth, what's happening?
I'm in the middle of learning more about the mixing and mastering process while recording new songs, trying to get on a higher level studiowise. Homerecording is tricky, when you're not a pro, but I'm getting better at it- at least what I think- with each new album. I'm learning.
So far I've got 9 songs, some already finished, except for the experimental mastering process. That's the last tweak on the mix.

Here's a one last thing I've done for my last album. Didn't hear it yet? Here you are Spotify
Got this little flashy, funny video for ya, sort of a collage of different versions of me playing  the same song "Rock'n Roll Me In Or Out". Hey it's my holidays by the way! I'm off....

"You keep rolling in rolling out of my life
You've packed your bags, won't say farewell
Ain't got no tissues up there in Heartbreak Hotel

You keep rolling in rock'n roll me out of your life!

You keep walking in you keep walking out of my life
I knock at your door you won't open up
Keep pounding even louder I won't give it up

You keep ruling me in ruling me out of my life"

zondag 5 juli 2015

Hey, I know that song!

Hi folks, it's hot in da lowlands, but I still keep going!
Yes I am curious and as I stumbled upon those funny, glossy-styled video's I immediately recognized that voice (aargh) and the sound. Most of the songs are licensed by Jamendo. So far I've found 160 (there could be more of course) of them with a lot old, funky dutchman stuff and some do not fit at all:

Dance Till Your Drunk [2005], I Want It Back, Overdone [2005], Desertfly [2007], Making Faces [2008], Mumbo Jumbo Heebie Jeebies [2008], Wonder [2008], Violent Boy [2008], The Root of My Belly [2009], The Greek Way Garden [2010], Back To The Race [2011], Bigger Things [2011], Sugar tune [2011], Stupid Song(s) [2013], Sin Pan Alleyman [2014], Intermission Of Love [2014], Buy (Bye Bye) [2014], Slow Motion Dream [2014], Bomber Drone [2014]Have a great summer everyone!

Just to add another way to find the obvious. Yes, I have one ( JoosTVD's vids) where I upload my own promo videos, but these days YouTube collects all the songtitles associated with the artist. Quite a varied bunch I may say....

Unscrew Yourself, video promo "Lightning Dutchman"

Yes! As I write this, the new album is in the distribution process and when approved it will arrive in a few (2 to 4) weeks. Spotify, Deezer and iTunes will be the first streamlinks, the rest will follow. Fingers & legs crossed.
Now get ready for the first promo video, especially if you've got the blues. I've got that sometimes. You'll see what I do in that case in the clip. Guess we all feel screwed up sometimes, so what if I add a "positive" Un on it so we say: Unscrew Yourself? That's it, Say it! Get involved. It's the first song you'll hear when you put on that Lightning Dutchman [2015] album. So enjoy, hope you like...

Sketches Of Lou (the video)

Sketches Of Lou
Ok, we have all been waiting so long...no you didn't!
It's almost a year now since the man left the planet.....so the right moment for me to put out that video for "Velvet Shoes" that I've promised. It's the last thing I do for my the album "I MImic Me", because I'm already on a whole other level in the process of creation: got some brand new songs coming up! Yes, it never stops (I'm glad), just can't sit still. Excited!

Busy
I have put a lot of work in this, mostly a drawing supporting video. It shows me (wishing it is me that is walking on the wild side) and some different familiar Lou's most of the time, all sequenced rhythmically in a lot of frames. That took ages, before I was really satisfied. For the singalong fan I've included lyrics to yell out.
Originaly I had some black & white drawings. Later on I "coloured" them in with a handy online photo editer called Picmonkey. You can see and read about them in my earlier posts if you like sketches.

!Viewers with photosensitive epilepsy, beware of visual intensity!

Enjoy and spread 'em!

Lyrics   Velvet Shoes

Now Andy Boy And Mary Lou
They Used To Wear Those VELVET SHOES
They Did The Walk On The Very Wild Side
In The White Heat And The White Light

Now Mary Lou She Used To Play
All Of Your Records On A Perfect Day
Until She Couldn't Listen No More
Now She's Walking Out Of The Door

You Want To Have a Good Time
You Want To Get It Out Of Your Mind
You Want A Change Of The Scene
You Can Blame It On The New York Dream

Well You're Wasting Time
Your Precious Time
Drinking Cheap Cheap Wine
All Of The Time
Now You're Out Of Your Mind
But You Have A Good Time
Down In Your Hole

Hey LOU This Is My Ode To You
Finally Learned To Talk Like
You're Supposed To Do
Maybe I Walk More On The Safer Side
Well This Ain't The Big Apple
But I Give It A Try

I Have Jolly Good Time
I Want To Get It Out Of My Mind
I Wanna Change Of The Scene
I Blame It On The New York Dream
I'm Wasting Time.....

Paycheck!

1.Hey José, where the hell have you been?
2.Where is that tribute video of Lou Lou you've been promising since don't know when?

1.Relaxing in the backgarden thinking about what to do with that bonus

Ok, sometimes I'm so deep down digging in my musical cave, I don't even know where the entrance was. Too pre-occupied with the nice moments of inspiration maybe, but on the other hand I am a compassionate familyman for the full 101%.
So to answer those obvious questions:
1. I'm "always" writing, playing, noodling, even at night, a burst of silent energy has to be written down in words. Kicks all around! The new music is very groovy, funky, slick and dirty, I can't stop this hypnosis.
I can relax a bit. See picture: a few weeks back I found out I've earned a "few" bucks on licenses at Jamendo. More than I could have imagined!
Since I've been distributing my music on Jamendo, a lot of people have listened to my stuff and even more effectively, have used it as background music for their benefit, like public places, projects, restaurants and more.

It's about being played. Streaming is not that profitable now for artists maybe, but it will, because more and more people do that. Downloading (piracy, iTunes) is outa here!
Radioplays are the best way reach more people. As you know Croydon radio (suburb London) has been playing my songs (playlisted) almost every week since the beginning of 2013. (Brouhaha, Stupid Song(s), The Route Through The Quiet Jungle, Talkwalk, Trip Together, The Root Of My Belly, Alice Tea, I See You, Cowboy On The Moon, Social Suicide have been played on various radioshows). Here's the list of the most played 499 artists on Croydon (I am on number 10!)
Croydon most played all time

2.Try to make a nice fitting video, well it's a difficult thing to do that yourself as an amateur. Even though I'm not a professional with the best movie editing skills, I can still see all those nice little drawings I spontaniously scribbled down (Scribbles) a few months ago, come together more and more as I flesh out all the tiny, little details in those moving frames. All it needs a bit more time and... time is the healer.

2.boy from that promised video
And now.....listen and enjoy:

Autobiographies, bad albums(?), Youtube Topics

                                                                                    The Root Of My Belly

Hai there, fellow world citizens, hope you're all doing well......even when the ups seem to be going down, there's always music to comfort you in all in its mysterious ways. Since I don't know when, I've been enjoying that magical mystery of discovering new or old sounds. And when I'm hooked, I want to hear the whole story (also the really "bad" albums that artists have put out, they are there for a reason!). I also read a lot about the background of an artist/band and about the specific period when they had their thrills and frills. More mystery, curiosty kills the cat! Details about their spent youth I find mostly boring though, but that's the unavoidable, cliché part of biographies. As is the road to hell and back (drugs, more drugs, meditation, fame, goeroes, religion, good or bad music and more drugs), but I also find this a fascinating and welcome treat.
A different approach to this, Ray Davies did with his X-Ray book. Almost in a Wellesian thriller-like surreal way, he reflects back on his life. Excellent.
Sometimes the most narcistic auto-bios are the most fun to read, like the ones from the ex-members of KISS (no, I'm not a fan, just curious), Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. Talking about the typical sex, drugs rollercoaster stories and how they reflect back on their masks and..... lizzard-tongue Gene Simmons haha. Yes, some of those life lessons you just don't want to try out at home!

                                                                                       Vanished Dutchmen

Youtube is growing in numbers and in songs. Any prolific artist/band has got a "topic" there, generating all the stuff relating to your own favourites for easy access. Great when you're just reading another biography of Zappa, Townshend, Barrett and the like, you can create a fitting biography playlist to set the mysterious mood...

I will not write a biography of this vanished dutchman, no. I did not do drugs, banged the other man's wife or trashed the occasional hotel room, or did I? When I was young and o-so selfimportant brash, it was the grey, boring and fricking Eighties man! I'm so neat.....
But... JoosTVD has got few vids up there on Youtube (JoosTVD Topic), some have been uploaded by me from my own JoosTVD official (this is the stuff for biography-philes to find out about TVD), but a lot by one of my distribution labels iMusician. You can subscibe to different channels (pop, urban, rock, etc) up there. As common with all stream platforms, it's just another fun way to create personal playlists within a few clicks. So all my favourite artist are up there as "Topics".
The same is happening on facebook by the way, here's my topic of That Vanished Jojo. It's all generated by different sources and the listening behaviour of the curious ones.
Still, with all this accessibility, I will not, ever, give away my vinyl, cassettes, singles, cds, self-build racks, it's my life, you're talking about here, man!
So gather all your favourites and read some, I'm going back to my favourite drug....Bye, buy!

                                                                                                         Ragman
