That's faaast: the first review!

 Wow, wow!

JoosTVD – Put Your Fake In It
Format: CD – Digital / Label: Independent
Release: 2023

Tekst: Peter Marinus

Dutch:

Het luie en funky Put Your Fade In It bevat wat fusion invloeden a la Larry Carlton/Lee Ritenour.

Na het luchtig boppende Up Up volgt de 20’s swing van The Shit Hits The Band.

Agnes Magnus Populess is hilarisch!

English:

It just makes me very happy every time! A new album by JoostTVD, aka singer-songwriter Joost van Dinther aka The Vanished Dutchman.

On every album, Joost turns out to be a musical do-it-yourselfer who knows how to ingeniously mix his influences into a style all his own. That is (of course) also the case on his latest album.

Living Is Instant immediately swings sultry in a warm jazzy style a la Steely Dan or Michael Franks. A tropical surprise from our own soil of a trusted high quality. The lazy and funky Put Your Fade In It contains some fusion influences a la Larry Carlton/Lee Ritenour.

Hear The Sunshine Play sounds like Todd Rundgren has soaked himself in a Philly Soul bath while listening to Barry White on his headphones. After the airy bopping Up Up, the 20's swing of The Shit Hits The Band follows. A hilarious triple jump vaudeville number.

Then Joost continues funky with Hang On and showers us with a sentimental warm groovy feeling in Sentimental Overload. The energetic funky (that bass!!!) Careful contains the necessary Prince influences. The jazzy swinger Agree To Disagree sounds like a mix of Roy Ayers, Michael Franks and Steely Dan.

I'll eat my cowboy hat if Ennio isn't paying tribute to Ennio Morricone. A majestic ballad, performed in a Todd Rundgren-like manner. In Move U, the ingenious orchestration stands out, while the 60's psychedelic sound of Kevin Ayers can be heard in Mister Jump The Gun. Agnes Magnus Populess is hilarious! A kind of Monty Python-like funk!

The sultry heaving samba funk of Hear The Sunshine 2 closes the album.

No 'fake' on this excellent album, but adventurous 'Do It Yourself' straight from the heart!

Living Is Instant promo!

Show me some moving pictures!

Yes, but let me explain... I'm not a professional Godley and Creme video maker, although I do have a lot of fun with the process of creating something myself.

Inspiration

Well, a lot of that came from working, experimenting with Instagram. After I made the front cover(s) et all, I used those pictures as a background to put the singing stuff on top of it. I made a lot of short reels, where I tried to playback to the song with different effects on top of them. Almost all of those Joosts have sunglasses, haha. I don't know why..

Then I put all those faces in round frames, moving and shaking to the beat.

Hardware and software do matter!

It's all DIY stuff you know so it has its charms! Sure, the technical side is important of course, to work out precisely the pitching of the singing for example.. it almost drove me crazy. Overall I thinks it floats pretty well.

Hope you tap to the beat with me! So let's find some popcorn...

Put Your Fake In It

Hai Folks... I'm back with 14 brand new songs and there's nothing FAKE about them! Just try... and

"PUT YOUR FAKE IN IT"

will be released on 13 june 2023, distribution by AMAdea, yes for real.

I'm super excited off course, because as I get older, to create something new one should expect that it would come with more physical and mental difficulties and slowness. Well, everyone has its dog days -problems and frustrations- that's because we're human after all. Don't believe the news, just keep in touch.

But music always gets me going! It even gets easier to put ideas in a form that appeals to me. After all those years of repeating the process and work with an almost blind determination, my confidence has grown a lot in the way I work. I know what I like. I feel great and I feel bad at the same time and I accept that. Simple. I love it.

So here is my 19 digital release and to introduce it I'll show you the covers first.

Description:

I took a picture of that guy, cut it out and put it on a blank canvas with the world in the distant background. As I lost two beloved cats at the beginning of this year- I'm still processing this- I put a symbolic cat on the backcover, begging me for some attention. They gave me so much love. O, how I miss them...!!!

Kleintje and Dropje

The innersleeves were the first choices, but to not discard them totally, I gave them a better place.

I'm also busy working on this fake promo video. Yes, it's a process I've grown to love, but off course I'm not Stanley Kubrick.

Hope it will work out! CU, thanks for listening, TVD

Next: Yes, show me your fake promo video!

A new song that has to be shared to be believed....

...and to be heard. So I've finally came up with a new batch of songs. Well, I never thought I'd make an another album, but here we are again.

This is the first of twelve songs, this one slowly building up, crawling under your skin, I hope. I've shared it with soundcloud and the online magazine Homecooking Share.

Process.

A World Of Make Believe was basically done with the help of an acoustic guitar and a slow, but urging drumloop with a sort of hiss in its mix. Lyrically I had the word fake in my mind, as I regularly have lately, when I read the news. Make believe. Create your own reality or bubble and watch what happens to the sheep when you spread the word. A sinister and hypnotic tone of voice. You can hear that in the way I sing, I even almost rap or narrate the words. The chorus is more melodic with a latin feel around it for some contrasting relieve. With Gil Scott-Heron tapping on my shoulder.

Come on, let's find out on the 'Groove' page

Smart (watch 2)

While waiting on that new release, why not watch at another DIY video with lyrics included?

Smart, a song about cocky behavior that's a big part of the political world and social media in our society, takes you on an infectious, groovy, funky trip and ends on the top of that neverlasting, melting iceberg.
Picture of me throwing stones: Yola

Are you smart? (you can sing the words too)

From the new JoosTVD album: Doesn't Ring A Bell, release 2-5-2020.

Music/lyrics: JoosTVD

One week from now, you can hear the rest.
In the meantime, check smart Spotify

Let Us Hear/Watch A New Tune! (Promo 2)

To wet your appetite further, to get you involved with the new stuff, I want you to....behave. Well sort of. Second promo from the new album of JoosTVD: "The Fly On The Wall Routine", release 30th april 2019.
As a former drummer, I am always inspired by rhythm patterns from all over the world. There'a a syncopatic afro/latin-funk beat that's inspired this song. All the harmonies in the chorus are afro inspired. Instrumental arrangements, like the piano motives are more latinesque. Think "Talking Heads" Remain in Light's hypnotic feel. The lyrics: they have a serious and self-reflecting side: how to "behave' normally these days. Sing along! ("hey ya hey ya nanana") Behave...just like I do!

Watch promo 2:

Behave [Lyris/ Music: JoosTVD]

Larry likes to scream for hours
Fergie likes to eat the flowers
(Hey ya hey nanana)

There's a fire in my kitchen
A little murder on the floor
Nothing beats this witching anymore
I can't control my urges
Life's too easy in my court
And after all these purges I get bored

As long as you behave
(As long as you behave just like I do
And if you won't behave than I won't too)
Nothing will be happening to you
Behave just like I do I do

Hey ya hey ya nanana
Hey ya hey ya nanana
Hey ya hey ya nanana
Nothing will be happening to you

Hey ya hey ya nanana
Hey ya hey ya nanana
Hey ya hey ya nanana hey!

I see a bubble when you babble
The struggle when you slip
Who cares about the hassle when you're hip?
You cannot lose your temper
So you better sell your soul
And you can love me tender
Or not at all

As long as you behave
(As long as you behave just like I do
And if you won't behave than I won't too)
Nothing will be happening to you
Behave just like I do I do

Fergie likes to eat the flowers
Larry likes to scream for hours
Let me walk you through the papers
Maybe if I see you later

Hey ya hey ya nanana
(Hey hey hey)
Hey ya hey ya nanana
(Hey hey hey)
Hey ya hey ya nanana
Let me walk you through the papers
Hey ya hey ya nanana
(Hey hey hey)
Hey ya hey ya nanana
(Hey hey hey)
Hey ya hey ya nanana
Maybe if I see you later

Just say yes to them Songs

Ok. Fine. Did the work. Did you listen? Of course.
Just say...YES! Thank you.

A whole year just writing songs- and there were a lot of them- always makes you wonder which ones will make it to the finish line. I'm tired, but fulfilled and I ain't gonna stop now..so much to do....I'll just vanish again.
Now, pay attention, let me tell you all about the tunes on "Just Say KNOW".

01.Not Now
A quick and fun one to write, so obviously the first one that motivated me to create a new album again. Upbeat and funky. Fun to dance to. No, not now! Always looking out for the right groove to get me going. A lot of dancing tunes inspired me (especially those from the seventies).

02.The Vanished Romeo
One of my favourite songs of the album. I like the smooth shuffle, jazzy arrangements in the verses and the latin groove of the refrain. Slowly building up a tension. That's a combination that does it for me. A lot of sweat involved here that almost turned into a bloody mess. O Romeo....

03.Indie
What does that mean "Indie" anyway these days. Independent? It's a DIY world already!
Strumming chords can be boring, but this pattern kept me busy, playing for hours.

04.My Cat Is Stoned
A normal cats and dogs day... Cat wants to be a dog and vica versa. I simply wrote this on guitar.
I always try to come up with a fun song that keeps the balance between sad/glad/serious/fun.

05.Loaded
The latin infection. Latin stuff keeps creeping into my songs. Why? I love rhythm.
As long there's a melody/hook it's allright I guess. I'm loaded with that. This is a song about friendship and the love involved.

06.Gameface
On edge all the time...
That's my songwriting spirit sometimes. A bit more darker/ angrier  than the rest of the album. Good for the balance. Maybe a bit Peter Gabriel (So, Us) influence. I've payed a lot of attention to the dynamics.

07.Rottendance
I like dancing. Rhythm. Hypnotic beats... If it falls flat it's just what "disco" did at the end of the seventies  and what "house" does today. To me, it's not human, it's too safe, superficial (they all sound the same!), generetically rotten.
Here, I even give you a pulsing beat that evolves into a reggae pattern in the chorus. But don't misunderstand: I just want to dance again.

08.Crest Of A Wave
Bossa style dutchman. I've always admired brazilian music for its subtle, passionate and smooth patterns. Exotic music oozes summer. I'm just an old fashioned melancholic guy here.

09.There's No Sense In Making Sense
Stop making sense! A terrific Talking Heads concert movie said it all. Restless song, but floating. A little experimenting with the rhythm breaking up did the trick.

10.All The Way
The vanished crooner. As we reach the final, an easy-on the ears ballad can do wonders to comfort your soul and mind. All the way.

11.Not Ever
Coda: a dreamy instrumental and a serious contrast to the first (upbeat) song "Not Now". Say NO. Do not give in. Not Now, not ever.

The whole album on air

Radio is still important you know. Exposure is far greater than one spotify play by one listener. You can reach far more people. This next radio station has played my last album "Sagitario" all through 2017! Now I've this worldwide premiere, because my new album will be released only two weeks from now. Go to LonelyOakradio Press play at 6 PM tonight (london time, check your timetable). You have the chance to listen to the whole album in the "New Music Show"!

Delivered!

Dear folks, a quick update. I had a minor problem with the frontcover as it was not accepted by the distribution man due to low resolutions of the picture (quality!), so I've showed them another, better one. It's allright now. Fingers and legs crossed!

Proof!

Q & A 2018

Hello ladies and germs, I've got to get organised now. I'm still working my sorry ass off on those tunes, but hey....they sure give some grooves back to me! So many things to do, but I'm positive. As there's progress, here's what you can expect in the next few days, weeks, months (...?)

Before: Lazy Dutchman
Here's a little Q & A for ya:

Q: Are you "The Vanished Dutchman"?
A: I'm here, ain't I? I'm more human now. The Vanished Human. Rather that than a chauvinistic nationalist.

Q: Do you like music?
A: No

Q: What are you doing then?
A: Playing fiddle with a hammer

Q: What's on your mind these days?
A: Trying to be serious

Q: A new album, can we expect something different from the previous albums?
A: I dunno. I guess they all call it music.

Q: Well, what about a promo video?
A: Hey, I'm working on it! It's funky! But first I've got to finish the master of the chosen song, ok?

Q: Will it be you on the frontcover?
A: Well, it's a lucky shot that I've used. Yes, there's me and I've finished the covers already. But I've got to be really sure about the length and the sequence of the songs.

Q: What about a title?
A: Yes, I've got that figured out too. Won't tell you though. It's too shocking...I'll tell you all about it in the near future. It's a very simple one.

Q: Release date? Spring again?
A: Heeey, that's classified information! Gimme a break! Ok, well maybe...May 2018? If everything will go as planned, it will be around april that I'll sent it to AMAdea for distribution worldwide and that usually takes 3 to 4 weeks, so...

Q: The story about the songs?
A: Maaaan, I've got to work on those too! After the release I'll tell all my secrets. The whole world has got to listen first of course. Can you arrange that?

Yes it will happen folks

After: Lazy Dutchman

Wunderschön!

Hai folks, It's a cold spring so far, but that doesn't bother me at all. As long as the sun comes up......and if there's any music that will cure your spring fatigue...
The new stuff has been listened to and played on various radio and to round it off it has been reviewed. I hope more will follow, but there so much going on in musicland, so I have to be happy by whatever that's been giving me. Feedback.
Well here are some really nice words again (his eight review of my albums) from Nathan Norgel, placed in this german, cultural online magazine Wasser-Prawda

In english (not great these translations):
When spring comes, not only the swallows appear from the south. Also new music from the Dutch Joost van Dinther aka Joos TVD can be expected. His new album Sagitario fulfills the expectations most beautifully. On the lists of the places, which are sung, one appears actually too rarely. In 'Private Scene' JoosTVD sings the praise of the toilet. Because this is one of the few places where you can be really alone. Even psychopharmaceuticals, hectic friends, the lives of the rich in Hollowood, or other contemporary subjects provide the Dutch fabric for extremely humorous or sarcastic songs.
Musically, Sagitario again offers the complete range of jazz, funk, rock, cabaret and nonsense. If you do not know JoosTVD yet you can not really classify it. The fact that the songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, alone in his studio year after year, is a cure against any bad mood or spring fatigue.

Wow, great review from Nathan (Wasser-Prawda)!

So glad with this. Some feedback! He (Nathan Nörgel) knows his way with words and you have to read carefully to fully understand the german symbolic meanings he gives of various songs. So I'll give you a "not so perfect" translation after. If you understand it, tell me! If you don't, well I can try to explain!

"I Mimic Me" Review in Wasser-Prada

Original:
Was unwahrscheinlich schade ist.
(bandcamp)

English:
On his tenth so far (as always purely digitally published) album, the Dutch songwriter Joos TVD aka The Vanished Dutchman remains: unlikely entertaining. Musically, he explored on 'I Mimic Me' pretty much every territory between rock, fusion jazz, pop and even blues.
With blues, this multi-instrumentalist has actually not so. The more surprised I was when I discovered a title called Ballroom Blues on the tracklist of the new album. But who is now waiting for the holy twelve bars knows Joos TVD bad. Because the piece on futile attempts to be perceived as someone else's first rock, between it breaks up briefly in swinging Jazzgefilde. And overall, this is again a melancholic and humorous song, like him nowadays perhaps Zappa could have written. The beginning of 'I Mimic Me' had me as musically surprised even more. For songs like 'Cowboy On The Moon' or 'Velvet Shoes' pearls initially elegant as the jazzy pop of Steely Dan.

What I notice is the melancholy of the songs that is often adjusted only slightly from the music. Here - and brings us to the title of the album - the artist tries to imitate himself as a child. And of course, this is doomed to failure. What is unlikely shame. Because as an adult you are with all the effort often no more than a 'Cowboy On The Moon', so completely the wrong place, one commits suicide relentlessly social, if you do not care about the rules.

Even the relationships threaten to fail in such banalities that even he loves his cat, while the partner is fond of her dog and the two animals get along like pigs and frogs. So like the proverbial dog and cat.
'I Mimic Me' - a great album musically and also from the lyrics here. And even if mimicking the music here all the topic according to the style of the last few decades, that is, by no means, that the pieces of Joost van Dinther would not be extremely orginal. (Bandcamp)

Dutch:

(Bandcamp)
