TVD overwhelms again with positive musical impulses. For several years and albums he has dared to sail against the depressive current with a mix of pop, funk, jazz and vaudeville. In the past we have already compared the cool Dutchman to the European Todd Rundgren, influenced by Frank Zappa and Brian Protheroe. Meanwhile, the DIY has developed its own fun style in his studio, immediately recognizable and without compromise.

The new 19th album starts with the swinging 'Living Is Instant', a truth like a Dutch cow. The perfect opener for the funky 'Put Your Fade In It': a boost for those who don't like it anymore. And if that doesn't seem enough, then 'Hear The Sunshine' will encourage you to enjoy life.

Even stronger than on his previous albums, Joost knows how to dress the sensitive string in his lyrics with uplifting vibes and grooves.

Humor is not uncommon in his work, it even gets crazy with 'The Shit Hits The Band'. Or the kazoo-enhanced 'Mister Jump The Gun'. And what about the crazy voice acting in 'Agnes Magnus Populess'?

The funky 'Hang On' surprises with some clever transitions. 'Sentimental Overload' triggers with 'confidential information' ...tightly constructed, few frills, to the point.

'Agree To Disagree' starts very jazzy and then quietly meanders on and ends richly towards the end. A strong piece of creativity that is further interpreted in an instrumental ode to Ennio Morricone and the extremely original 'Move U' with dragging rhythm and strings as jammers.

If you want to start the day in all cheerfulness, let JoostTVD blare through the speakers. It makes your living instantly happy, really!

TVD overweldigt weer met positieve muzikale impulsen. Al ettelijke jaren en albums durft hij tegen de depressieve stroom invaren met een mix van pop, funk, jazz en vaudeville. In het verledn hebben ij de toffe nederlander al eens vergeleken met de europese Todd Rundgren, beinvloedt door Frank Zappa en Brian Protheroe. Ondertussen heeft de DIY in zijn studio een eigen leuke stijl ontwikkeld, onmiddelijk herkenbar en zonder compromissen.

Het nieuwe 19e album start met het swingende 'Living Is Instant', een waarheid als een hollandse koe. De perfecte opener voor het funky 'Put Your Fade In It': een opsteker voor hen die het niet meer zien zitten. En als dat niet voldoende lijkt, dan zal 'Hear The Sunshine' je wel stimuleren om te genieten van het leven.

Nog sterker dan op zijn vorige albums weet Joost de gevoelige snaar in zijn lyrics in te kleden met opbeurende vibes en grooves.

Joos TVD – Doesn’t Ring A Bell

It is an annual ritual. Joos TVD delivers another album. This time for the sixteenth time! And still Joos TVD is not an established name in Dutch pop music. However, I keep insisting to bring it to your attention.

This concerns singer-songwriter Joost van Dinther, also known as the Vanished Dutchman.

At least he has a fan in the British artist Tom Robinson (known from 2-4-6-8 Motorway) because Robinson played a number of Joos song in his radio program on BBC6.

A characteristic of Joos's music is the adventure that resonates in his music in which all kinds of musical examples of Joos crop up.

On his new album Joos clearly has the summer in his head because in almost all songs there is a languid, sunny sound in which I often encountered the sound of Kevin Ayers.

Right in the opening track The Heavy Donut Discount Blues you are already in the Caribbean, rocking your hip with a cocktail in your hand, musing about a heavy donut. Joos sounds like our own Kid Creole here. The cocktail atmosphere lingers in Flower Power Festival, a sultry heaving song with a great Kevin Ayers content, which is not surprising since Ayers also liked a “Caribbean Moon”.
In When U Go Rong, Joos moves to an intimate Spanish village, where a la Kevin Ayers / J.J. Cale release a loom number on us. A song that is so good that it makes you spin. The warming Do It Without Love reminds us of the early work of Todd Rundgren and Fay Lovsky with frolicking keyboard work.
Smart then has a funky 80's wave sound a la Orange Juice with a wonderfully grooving funky bass and a suddenly emerging tear guitar.
Then Joos goes on a sultry cradle tour with the almost bossa nova-like And Again. With Midnight Cowgirl it's time for a grinder. An instrumental song that sounds like a lazy mix of nightclub jazz and “Don't Cry For Me Argentina”.
It remains romantic in the fragile romantic ballad Cold with a beautifully strumming acoustic guitar, which evokes a true After Eight atmosphere. And Joos keeps it cold.
The funkbas returns in Get Your Facts Straight. Funky as Heaven 17 or Talking Heads. U Save Lies also functions more in a sparkling angular way.
After the gracefully floating instrumental ballad To An Inchworm with his melancholy crying synthesizer, Joos closes the album with the absurd ragtime of Over My Very Dead Like. And I have the word on it, Joos. Over my dead body….

Joos TVD again manages to come up with an album that is full of all kinds of musical adventures.

Once again I call on everyone to give this album a try!

JoosTVD – The Fly On The Wall Routine

Ik werd in 2018 op een erg prettige manier verrast door het vorige album van JoosTVD, ‘Just Say KNOW‘. Een album, dat voor mij één grote muzikale ontdekkingsreis was, waarbij er bij elke luisterbeurt weer nieuwe dingen opdoken.
We hebben hier te maken met songwriter Joost van Dinther, een muzikale doe-het-zelver, die al veertig jaar bezig is en inmiddels aan zijn vijftiende digitale release toe is.
En de muzikale ontdekkingsreis gaat gewoon verder met zijn nieuwste release.
Zoals we inmiddels van Joost gewend zijn opent hij het album met een nummer waarin weer van alles gebeurt. Zo is Fly Talk voorzien een romig funky geluid waarin invloeden als Gino Vannelli en Steely Dan rondwaren en waarin Joost zijn meest soulvolle stem opzet. Hij weet in dit romig groovende nummer de meest ingenieuze breaks in te passen.
Hoekige funkgrooves openen Stuck, een zeer loom en vet funky nummer met een warme synbass. Ook hier zijn de Steely Dan invloeden duidelijk aanwezig, vermengd met een flink jazz-funk geluid. Behave heeft een onweerstaanbaar funkritme met lichte Indiaanse trekjes via een “heya heya heya” koortje, en dat heb ik sinds de tijden van Redbone niet meer gehoord!
Say The Word opent met een subtiele akoestsche gitaar en deint zacht tikkend verder met een lui, tegen Kevin Ayers aanschurende, geluid. Ook het solowerk van Sting is in de buurt. Treason is een maf pompend toetsennummer waarin ik achtereenvolgens Supersister, Zappa, Gruppo Sportivo en Sparks voorbij zag trekken in een soort slapstick soundtrack.
Joost laat in het zwevende vaudeville nummer The Vanished Vaudeville zijn synthesizer als een soort theremine zweven. Een instrumental, die duidelijk in de Todd hoek zit terwijl ik er ook het geluid van de obscure Britse synthesizer band Seventh Wave in terug hoorde.
Kick Together is een swingend nummer, voorzien van zeer eigenzinnige, hoekige grooves. Een soort hikkerige funk dus met een geluid dat klinkt alsof Todd Rundgren is gaan samenwerken met The Yellow Magic Orchestra. Ook voor softsoul draait Joost zijn hand niet om getuige Not Today. Hij klinkt in dit nummer als Hall & Oates in hun beginperiode, Lou Rawls en Billy Paul en dat allemaal in een stuwend bombastisch soulnummer.
Daarna is Do Your Job een bizarre mengeling van wiebelige synthesizermuziek en easy listening-achtige getrompetter.
Na de luie mix van funk, Zuid-Amerikaanse muziek en fusion in U Know That Now wordt het album afgesloten met de sprankelende instrumentale mix van Prince funk, sunshine pop en Zappa in The Fly Off The Wall Routine. Een nummer dat geheel onverwachts op het eind overgaat in mysterieus schurende fusion.
JoosTVD heeft wederom een prachtig muzikaal avonturenboek afgeleverd. Een album dat je steeds maar weer opzet om nog meer muzikale ontdekkingen te doen. Ik kan nu al niet wachten op zijn volgende muzikale ontdekkingsreis!

I was pleasantly surprised in 2018 by JoosTVD's previous album, \"Just Say KNOW.\" An album, which was a great musical journey of discovery for me, with new things popping up every time I listened.
We are dealing with songwriter Joost van Dinther, a musical do-it-yourselfer, who has been busy for forty years. and is now ready for his fifteenth digital release.

And the musical journey of discovery continues with his newest release.

Just like we are used to from Joost, he opens the album with a song in which everything happens again . For example, Fly Talk is provided with a creamy funky sound in which influences such as Gino Vannelli and Steely Dan are circulating and in which Joost sets up his most soulful voice. He knows how to fit the most ingenious breaks in this creamy grooving song.
Angular funk grooves open Stuck, a very slow and fat funky song with a warm synbass. Here too the Steely Dan influences are clearly present, mixed with a considerable jazz funk sound. Behave has an irresistible funk rhythm with light Indian traits through a “heya heya heya” choir, and I haven't heard that since the times of Redbone! , against Kevin Ayers scouring sound. Sting's solo work is also nearby. Treason is a weird pumping number in which I saw successively Supersister, Zappa, Gruppo Sportivo and Sparks pass by in a kind of slapstick soundtrack. An instrumental, clearly sitting in the Todd corner while I also heard the sound of the obscure British synthesizer band Seventh Wave in it.
Kick Together is a swinging song, with very quirky, angular grooves. A kind of furious funk with a sound that sounds like Todd Rundgren has started working with The Yellow Magic Orchestra. Also for softsoul, Joost does not turn his hand to witness Not Today. He sounds like Hall & Oates in this song in their early days, Lou Rawls and Billy Paul and all in a driving bombastic soul song.
Afterwards Do Your Job is a bizarre mix of wobbly synthesizer music and easy listening-like trumpeter. music and fusion in U Know That Now the album ends with the sparkling instrumental mix of Prince funk, sunshine pop and Zappa in The Fly Off The Wall Routine. A song that unexpectedly turns into mysteriously abrasive fusion at the end.

JoosTVD has once again delivered a beautiful musical adventure book. An album that you constantly set up to make even more musical discoveries. I can't wait for his next musical journey of discovery already!

The Vanished Drunk

Bij dit album is wel het één en ander uit te leggen. Allereerst de artiestennaam JoostTVD. TVD staat hier voor “The Vanished Dutchman” en dat is weer een alias van de Nederlandse singer-songwriter Joost van Dinther. Hij omschrijft zijn muziek zelf als “zelfbevlekkende, narcistische, selfkickende, obsessieve en uitknijpende muziek”. Een hele mondvol dus.  Joost ontpopt zich op dit album als een muzikale doe-het-zelver, die met het grootste gemak allerlei muziekstijlen door elkaar heen gooit en daar weer één prachtig geheel van maakt.
Tom Robinson, de Engelse artiest die in de new wave periode hits scoorde met “2-4-6-8 Motorway” en “Listen To The Radio”, was dermate onder de indruk van Joost dat hij een aantal van zijn songs draaide in zijn radioprogramma op BBC 6.
Wat krijgen we hier te horen? Muziek, die beïnvloed is door artiesten als Todd Rundgren, Frank Zappa, The Tubes en nog veel meer artiesten/genres.
Het openingsnummer, Not Now, is bijvoorbeeld een funky rocknummer waarin invloeden rondzweven van Todd Rundgren, Gino Vannelli en Frank Zappa. Met name die dwarse xylofoon zou zo bij Zappa vandaan kunnen komen. Razendknap om van al die invloeden een aanstekelijk swingend funky nummer te maken. Er gebeurt echt van alles in dit nummer. Knetterende Tower Of Power-achtige blazers, een scheurende gitaarsolo en elektronische ritmes, die totaal niet storen. The Vanished Romeo begint met new age-achtige panfluit geluiden, die al snel weggevaagd worden door een schroeiende wah wah gitaar. Vervolgens wordt een luie, geile Zappa funker ingezet vol ingenieuze breaks. Joos heeft een perfect zwoel stemgeluid voor dit nummer. Ook de eigenzinnigheid van The Tubes en Todd Rundgren klinken door in dit nummer. Het luchtige funky Indie mengt Zappa, The Tubes en Toto tot een warm wiegend nummer. My Cat Is Stoned is een bizarre mix van vaudeville, funk en Zappiaanse waanzin. Er komt van alles voorbij in dit nummer: maffe stemmetjes, fluitjes, geboer, en dat alles over een kat die stoned is! Loaded is vervolgens een Tito Puente-achtig latin fusionnummer. Zwoel swingend met soulvolle zang en haast Philly soul-achtige strijkers. Gameface doet qua synthesizergeluid denken aan het spacey werk van Gary Wright, in zijn “Dream Weaver” periode. Maar Joos vermengt dit uiteraard met het geluid van The Tubes, de erotische zwijmelsoul van Barry White en Zappa.
Nerveus ratelende elektro ritmes ontwikkelen zich in Rottendance tot een loom groovend nummer vol zwevende synthesizers en retestrakke Zappa breaks. Probeer hier maar eens op te dansen! Ik garandeer je dat je binnen no time kramp in je kuiten hebt! In Crest Of A Wave gaan we op de softsoul toer met een hoog Gino Vannelli gehalte, compleet met een ruisende branding. In de felle, eigenzinnige funkrock van There’s No Sense In Making Sense lijkt Zappa een huwelijk aangegaan te zijn met Johnny Guitar Watson en de ritmesectie van Tower Of Power. All The Way is een zwoel nachtclub nummer dat doet denken aan Kevin Ayers en zijn “Falling In Love With You”.
Joos sluit dit zeer avontuurlijke album af met de sprookjesachtige instrumental Not Ever, die gedomineerd wordt door zijn warme romantische toetsenwerk.
Ik ben zeer onder de indruk van de veelzijdigheid van JoosTVD en ga het album nog maar eens opzetten. Eens kijken wat ik nu weer allemaal ga ontdekken!

With this album you can explain a few things. First the artist name JoostTVD. TVD stands for 'The Vanished Dutchman' and that is another alias of Dutch singer-songwriter Joost van Dinther. He describes his music as 'self-stinking, narcissistic, self-kicking, obsessive and squeezing music'. A whole mouthful.

Joost reveals himself on this album as a musical do-it-yourselfer, who throws all kinds of musical styles together with the greatest ease and makes one more beautiful whole.
Tom Robinson, the English artist who scored hits in the new wave period with '2-4-6-8 Motorway' and 'Listen To The Radio', was so impressed with Joost that he played some of his songs in his radio program on BBC 6.
What can we hear here? Music influenced by artists like Todd Rundgren, Frank Zappa, The Tubes and many more artists / genres.

The opening track, Not Now, is for example a funky rock song in which influences float around from Todd Rundgren, Gino Vannelli and Frank Zappa. Especially that transverse xylophone could come from Zappa. A frenzy to make all those influences an infectious swinging funky song. There really is everything happening in this issue. Crackling Tower Of Power-like horns, a ripping guitar solo and electronic rhythms, that do not disturb at all. The Vanished Romeo starts with new age-like panflute sounds, which are quickly wiped out by a scorching Wah Wah guitar. Then a lazy, horny Zappa funker is used full of ingenious breaks. Joos has a perfectly sultry voice for this song. Also the idiosyncrasy of The Tubes and Todd Rundgren resound in this song. The airy funky Indie mixes Zappa, The Tubes and Toto into a warm rocking song. My Cat Is Stoned is a bizarre mix of vaudeville, funk and Zappian madness. All kinds of things pass by in this song: wacky voices, whistles, bats, and everything about a cat that is stoned! Loaded is then a Tito Puente-like latin fusion number. Swinging with soulful singing and almost Philly soul-like strings. In terms of synthesizer sound, Gameface is reminiscent of the spacey work of Gary Wright in his 'Dream Weaver' period. But Joos mixes this with the sound of The Tubes, the erotic whisper of Barry White and Zappa.
Nervous rattling electro rhythms develop into a loom grooving song full of floating synthesizers and retro twist Zappa breaks in Rottendance. Try dancing here! I guarantee that you have cramp in your calves in no time! In Crest Of A Wave we go on the softsoul tour with a high Gino Vannelli level, complete with a rustling surf. In the fierce, quirky funk rock of There's No Sense In Making Sense, Zappa seems to have entered into a marriage with Johnny Guitar Watson and the rhythm section of Tower Of Power. All The Way is a sultry nightclub song reminiscent of Kevin Ayers and his 'Falling In Love With You'.
Joos closes this very adventurous album with the fairytale instrumental Not Ever, which is dominated by his warm romantic keyboard work.

I am very impressed by the versatility of JoosTVD and will put the album up again. Let's see what I'm going to discover again!

Lyrics are little bastards

Hai there autumn people!

No, I haven't forget you, I just kept myself busy with the works. I've got 8 completed songs in the can, all more or less ready for the mixdown. I've payed a lot of attention to my vocals, especially the nuances, the precise pronunciation of the vowels. And harmonising. Well, we've got autotune for that? I only use it for effect. Very little. Jacob Collier does a great thing with autotune harmonising, but in the end it's all just a trick. Keep it real boy, your voice is great on itself.
So many different choices to make with all different styles of music. And always the love for funky tracks with a latin vibe got me in an intense mood. As I know my capabilities more, I'm having a lot of fun with singing now. I sweat like a pig sometimes, but that's just a bold expression for the way I work. Intensity. Ok, it was a hot summer.
Ah, yes. Those magic words that fit the melody. Always a challenge to find them. Sometimes they just fall out from my mouth like easy snow. It's a hard and underestimated work though, just look at the picture:

Where (?) do they (?) all come from?
I've read in one of Todd Rundgren's biographies, that he mostly come up with the words, sing all the harmonies and record them just.at the last moment. I guess a little self imposed pressure has helped me out a lot, but when your mindset is not there, better let the flow come back to you another fresh time.
I use a bit of Todd and David Byrne's method he first used at the "Remain In Light" sessions. He often sings nonsense vowels (oo, aa eee, oe, hiii) at first in a spontanious way and writes lyrics on those vowels.
Reminds me of the action painting of Pollock where you just let it all out, dripping paint from your hands. In blues, when one is singing, it's common to just let it out, even repeat the sentence just to understate or confirm an emotion. It's only natural. Bluespower.
