With The Very Hairy New Standard, JoosTVD delivers another album (already in his 22nd year) that exists entirely in its own universe: a world in which pop, funk, playful experiments and tongue-in-cheek humor constantly intersect. It is a record that, with its compact playing time of more than 33 minutes, does not bore for a second and in which JoosTVD once again proves that he remains one of the most idiosyncratic and productive musicians in the Netherlands. The songs are short, pointed and full of small musical discoveries that you only fully notice after several listens.

The opener De Nada immediately sets the tone: light-footed, rhythmic and with that typical JoosTVD twist that hangs somewhere between pop and funk. The One Not the Only and Laid-Back build on that with a relaxed groove and melodies that settle in your head surprisingly quickly. JoosTVD likes compact songs, and you can hear that: no unnecessary frills, but just enough arrangement to give each song character. Bread Crums for the Hermit and Loving Place show how he manages to create a completely unique atmosphere with minimal means. Halfway through the album, he dives deeper into his own musical fantasy world with The Sky Mountain Way and The Very Hairy Old Standard. Especially the latter song stands out because of its longer playing time and more drawn-out structure, as if JoosTVD takes a moment to unfold his ideas further. It's one of the moments when you hear how musically skilled he is, without it ever becoming pretentious. Viva las Visa and Fiddle a Little then bring back lightness and tempo, with playful rhythms and a wink that you immediately pick up as a listener. In the final phase of the album we find Après la Lettre, Into the Sunlight and The Sundance Kid, three short but atmospheric tracks that round off the whole with a feeling of lightness and freedom. They are songs that feel almost cinematic, as if they accompany small scenes in a quirky indie film. JoosTVD stays true to his style: melodic, funky, sometimes absurdist, but always musically thoughtful.
The Very Hairy New Standard is again a typical JoosTVD album: stubborn, creative, playful and surprisingly coherent despite the many styles and ideas that pass by. It is music that does not try to meet trends, but rather stems from pure artistic freedom. For fans of his earlier work, this is a feast of recognition; For new listeners, this is an excellent introduction to an artist who has been following his own path for years. JoosTVD proves once again that originality and pleasure in making music can still go hand in hand.

Met The Very Hairy New Standard levert JoosTVD opnieuw een album af (inmiddels al weer zijn 22^e) dat volledig in zijn eigen universum bestaat: een wereld waarin pop, funk, speelse experimenten en tongue‑in‑cheek humor elkaar voortdurend kruisen. Het is een plaat die met zijn compacte speelduur van ruim 33 minuten geen seconde verveelt en waarin JoosTVD opnieuw bewijst dat hij één van de meest eigenzinnige en productieve muzikanten van Nederland blijft. De nummers zijn kort, puntig en zitten vol kleine muzikale vondsten die je pas na meerdere luisterbeurten volledig opmerkt.

De opener De Nada zet meteen de toon: lichtvoetig, ritmisch en met die typische JoosTVD‑twist die ergens tussen pop en funk in hangt. The One Not the Only en Laid‑Back bouwen daarop voort met een ontspannen groove en melodieën die zich verrassend snel in je hoofd nestelen. JoosTVD houdt van compacte songs, en dat hoor je: geen overbodige franje, maar precies genoeg arrangement om elk nummer karakter te geven. Bread Crums for the Hermit en Loving Place laten horen hoe hij met minimale middelen toch een volledig eigen sfeer weet te creëren. Halverwege het album duikt hij met The Sky Mountain Way en The Very Hairy Old Standard dieper zijn eigen muzikale fantasiewereld in. Vooral dat laatste nummer valt op door zijn langere speelduur en meer uitgesponnen structuur, alsof JoosTVD even de tijd neemt om zijn ideeën verder open te vouwen. Het is een van de momenten waarop je hoort hoe muzikaal vaardig hij is, zonder dat het ooit pretentieus wordt. Viva las Visa en Fiddle a Little brengen daarna weer luchtigheid en tempo terug, met speelse ritmes en een knipoog die je als luisteraar direct oppikt. In de slotfase van het album vinden we Après la Lettre, Into the Sunlight en The Sundance Kid, drie korte maar sfeervolle tracks die het geheel afronden met een gevoel van lichtheid en vrijheid. Het zijn nummers die bijna filmisch aanvoelen, alsof ze kleine scènes begeleiden in een eigenzinnige indie‑film. JoosTVD blijft trouw aan zijn stijl: melodieus, funky, soms absurdistisch, maar altijd muzikaal doordacht.

The Very Hairy New Standard is daarmee opnieuw een typisch JoosTVD‑album: eigenwijs, creatief, speels en verrassend coherent ondanks de vele stijlen en ideeën die voorbij komen. Het is muziek die niet probeert te voldoen aan trends, maar juist voortkomt uit pure artistieke vrijheid. Voor de liefhebbers van zijn eerdere werk is dit een feest van herkenning; voor nieuwe luisteraars een uitstekende kennismaking met een artiest die al jaren zijn eigen pad volgt. JoosTVD bewijst opnieuw dat originaliteit en plezier in muziek maken nog altijd hand in hand kunnen gaan.

It has become a tradition that I look forward to every year. A new album from Joostvd! This singer-songwriter and do-it-yourselfer Joost van Dinther, a.k.a. The Vanishing Dutchman, has imposed himself with a new album every year. And every time he surprises with very high -quality songs in which all kinds of influences pass by such as the warm Kevin Ayers sound through the singing of Joost, Cocktail Jazz, Bee Gees Disco, Fusion, Frank Zappa, Steely Dan ...

opens his new album With the ingenious \"Hink-Step-Sprong\" funk from Keep the Temperature Down. Full of lazy grooves, who stumble over each other but still continue to swing.

then it's time for the Samba in the Dark. Because of Joost's singing, this song sounds like Kevin Ayers ventures on the Samba with good results and a cocktail in his hand. The Bee Gees Disco sound is brought by Joost in that freaking disco through the mangle resulting in a grooving Stely Dan-like sound. Voyage of Vanity is then a beneficial cocktail jazz number powered by lazy electronic rhythms.

The venomous pumping, and funky, the girl not the blues is full of angular grooves and fusion influences. The intimate side of Joost passes by the Michael Franks-like Souljazz song When Blue Turns to Gray. City in the Sea is an instrumental floating Syn-Pop number in the best Yellow Magic Orchestra tradition. Speaking of The Yellow Magic Orchestra ... Sakamoto is a respectful and atmospheric tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto. After the guitar instrumental flower in a flame, Joost closes his album with the hopping funky Zoo or Zen. I am already looking forward to the 2025 album!

Het is inmiddels een traditie geworden waar ik jaarlijks naar uitkijk. Een nieuw album van JoosTVD! Deze singer-songwriter en doe-het-zelver Joost van Dinther, a.k.a. The Vanishing Dutchman, heeft zichzelf opgelegd om elk jaar met een nieuw album te komen. En elke keer verrast hij met kwalitatief zeer hoogstaande nummers waarin allerlei invloeden voorbij komen zoals het warme Kevin Ayers geluid door de zang van Joost, cocktail jazz, Bee Gees disco, fusion, Frank Zappa, Steely Dan…

Zijn nieuwe album opent met de ingenieuze “hink-stap-sprong” funk van Keep The Temperature Down. Vol met luie grooves, die over elkaar  heen struikelen maar toch blijven swingen.

Dan is het tijd voor de samba in The Dark. Door de zang van Joost klinkt dit nummer alsof Kevin Ayers zich, met goed resultaat en een cocktail in zijn hand, aan de samba waagt. Het Bee Gees disco geluid wordt door Joost in That Freaking Disco door de mangel gehaald met een groovend Steely Dan-achtig geluid als gevolg. Voyage Of Vanity is vervolgens een weldadig cocktail jazz nummer aangedreven door luie elektronische ritmes.

Het venijnig pompend, en funky, The Girl Not The Blues zit vol met hoekige grooves en fusion invloeden. De intieme kant van Joost komt voorbij in het Michael Franks-achtige souljazz nummer When Blue Turns To Grey. City In The Sea is een instrumentaal zwevend syn-pop nummer in de beste Yellow Magic Orchestra traditie. Over the Yellow Magic Orchestra gesproken…Sakamoto is een respectvol en sfeervol eerbetoon aan Ryuichi Sakamoto.

In 196Tree laat Joost, al croonend, de 60’s pop voorbij komen. Na de gitaar instrumental Flower In A Flame sluit Joost zijn album af met het huppelend funky Zoo Or Zen.

Opnieuw levert JoosTVD een prima eigenzinnig kwaliteits album af. Ik kijk nu al uit naar het 2025 album!

The Dutch singer-songwriter JoosTVD managed to present his debut album in 2005. Now it's time for number 19. The man knows how to fully play and produce the album from a -z.

The album has a great diversity of sounds. But the basis is a funky swinging touch with a basic singing beat. It's the sounds with which you can't sit on your lazy ass. It has a South American touch that touches on the African. By incorporating the horns into the songs, it gets a jazz moment. But above all are the catchy repetitive lyrics of, among other things, the title track and the opening track 'Living is Instant' with which you are sucked into the album.
‘Hear the Sunshine Play’, ‘Careful’ with a nice bass line and the piano track ‘The Shit Hits the Band’ sound like crooners with a weed, but certainly entertaining.
The laid back songs 'Ennio' and 'Sentimental Overload' are the highlights of the album for me. From that perspective, a full album in a line would be most desirable to me. But the more people the more joy there are more flavors.

The album is a great album!

A Wow Review from Belgium!

I was waiting (im)patiently for it, but Marino Serdons did it again: so insightful and couraging! From the Belgian music magazine Keys and Chords

TVD overwhelms again with positive musical impulses. For several years and albums he has dared to sail against the depressive current with a mix of pop, funk, jazz and vaudeville. In the past we have already compared the cool Dutchman to the European Todd Rundgren, influenced by Frank Zappa and Brian Protheroe. Meanwhile, the DIY has developed its own fun style in his studio, immediately recognizable and without compromise.

The new 19th album starts with the swinging 'Living Is Instant', a truth like a Dutch cow. The perfect opener for the funky 'Put Your Fade In It': a boost for those who don't like it anymore. And if that doesn't seem enough, then 'Hear The Sunshine' will encourage you to enjoy life.

Even stronger than on his previous albums, Joost knows how to dress the sensitive string in his lyrics with uplifting vibes and grooves.

Humor is not uncommon in his work, it even gets crazy with 'The Shit Hits The Band'. Or the kazoo-enhanced 'Mister Jump The Gun'. And what about the crazy voice acting in 'Agnes Magnus Populess'?

The funky 'Hang On' surprises with some clever transitions. 'Sentimental Overload' triggers with 'confidential information' ...tightly constructed, few frills, to the point.

'Agree To Disagree' starts very jazzy and then quietly meanders on and ends richly towards the end. A strong piece of creativity that is further interpreted in an instrumental ode to Ennio Morricone and the extremely original 'Move U' with dragging rhythm and strings as jammers.

If you want to start the day in all cheerfulness, let JoostTVD blare through the speakers. It makes your living instantly happy, really!

TVD overweldigt weer met positieve muzikale impulsen. Al ettelijke jaren en albums durft hij tegen de depressieve stroom invaren met een mix van pop, funk, jazz en vaudeville. In het verledn hebben ij de toffe nederlander al eens vergeleken met de europese Todd Rundgren, beinvloedt door Frank Zappa en Brian Protheroe. Ondertussen heeft de DIY in zijn studio een eigen leuke stijl ontwikkeld, onmiddelijk herkenbar en zonder compromissen.

Het nieuwe 19e album start met het swingende 'Living Is Instant', een waarheid als een hollandse koe. De perfecte opener voor het funky 'Put Your Fade In It': een opsteker voor hen die het niet meer zien zitten. En als dat niet voldoende lijkt, dan zal 'Hear The Sunshine' je wel stimuleren om te genieten van het leven.

Ik word er gewoon elke keer erg blij van! Een nieuw album van JoosTVD, oftewel singer-songwriter Joost van Dinther oftewel The Vanished Dutchman.

Op ieder album ontpopt Joost zich als een muzikale doe-het-zelver die op ingenieuze wijze zijn invloeden tot een geheel eigen stijl weet te vermengen. Dat is (uiteraard) ook weer op zijn nieuwste album het geval.

Living Is Instant swingt er direct broeierig op los in een warme jazzy stijl a la Steely Dan of Michael Franks. Een tropische verrassing van eigen bodem van een vertrouwde hoge kwaliteit. Het luie en funky Put Your Fade In It bevat wat fusion invloeden a la Larry Carlton/Lee Ritenour.

Hear The Sunshine Play klinkt alsof Todd Rundgren zich in een Philly Soul bad heeft gedompeld terwijl hij Barry White op zijn koptelefoon heeft aanstaan. Na het luchtig boppende Up Up volgt de 20’s swing van The Shit Hits The Band. Een hilarisch hink-stap-sprong vaudeville nummer.

Vervolgens gaat Joost loom funkend verder met Hang On en overlaadt hij ons met een sentimenteel warm groovend gevoel in Sentimental Overload. Het energiek funkende (die bas!!!) Careful bevat de nodige Prince invloeden. De jazzy swinger Agree To Disagree klinkt als een mix van Roy Ayers, Michael Franks en Steely Dan.

Ik eet mijn cowboyhoed op als Ennio geen eerbetoon aan Ennio Morricone is. Een majestueuze ballad, die op een Todd Rundgren-achtige wijze wordt uitgevoerd. In Move U valt de ingenieuze orkestratie op terwijl het 60’s psychedelische geluid van Kevin Ayers terug te horen is in Mister Jump The Gun. Agnes Magnus Populess is hilarisch! Een soort Monty Pyhton achtige funk!

De zwoel deinende samba funk van Hear The Sunshine 2 sluit het album af.

Niks geen “fake” op dit uitstekende album maar recht uit het hart komende avontuurlijke ‘Do It Yourself’ !

 It just makes me very happy every time! A new album by JoostTVD, aka singer-songwriter Joost van Dinther aka The Vanished Dutchman.

On every album, Joost turns out to be a musical do-it-yourselfer who knows how to ingeniously mix his influences into a style all his own. That is (of course) also the case on his latest album.

Living Is Instant immediately swings sultry in a warm jazzy style a la Steely Dan or Michael Franks. A tropical surprise from our own soil of a trusted high quality. The lazy and funky Put Your Fade In It contains some fusion influences a la Larry Carlton/Lee Ritenour.

Hear The Sunshine Play sounds like Todd Rundgren has soaked himself in a Philly Soul bath while listening to Barry White on his headphones. After the airy bopping Up Up, the 20's swing of The Shit Hits The Band follows. A hilarious triple jump vaudeville number.

Then Joost continues funky with Hang On and showers us with a sentimental warm groovy feeling in Sentimental Overload. The energetic funky (that bass!!!) Careful contains the necessary Prince influences. The jazzy swinger Agree To Disagree sounds like a mix of Roy Ayers, Michael Franks and Steely Dan.

I'll eat my cowboy hat if Ennio isn't paying tribute to Ennio Morricone. A majestic ballad, performed in a Todd Rundgren-like manner. In Move U, the ingenious orchestration stands out, while the 60's psychedelic sound of Kevin Ayers can be heard in Mister Jump The Gun. Agnes Magnus Populess is hilarious! A kind of Monty Python-like funk!

The sultry heaving samba funk of Hear The Sunshine 2 closes the album.

No 'fake' on this excellent album, but adventurous 'Do It Yourself' straight from the heart!

Het grote muzikale avonturenboek van JoosTVD is inmiddels, al ik goed geteld heb, toe aan deel 18. En opnieuw blijf ik mij verbazen over het feit dat JoosTVD nog geen grote naam in ons eigen land, of in het buitenland, is.

Joost van Dinther, ook bekend als The Vanished Dutchman, laat namelijk opnieuw horen dat we hier met een zeer eigengereide artiest te maken hebben, die zijn invloeden niet verloochent maar ze integreert in zijn eigen unieke stijl.

In het openingsnummer van zijn nieuwe album, City Of The Pretty, klinkt JoosTVD als de Hollandse Isaac Hayes, of zoals U wilt Barry White. Funky symfonische soul dus met een eigenwijze snerpende synthesizer.

In Join The Line-Up gaat JoosTVD weer op de van hem zo bekende loom swingende toer waarbij hij klinkt als Todd Rundgren, die op de latin toer is gegaan. Go With U is een loom funky popnummer waarin lome Michael Franks-achtige zang vermengd wordt met de tropische Kid Creole stijl.

Het lui stuwende en jazzy groovende City Of The Mirrorballs verraadt invloeden als Steely Dan en Michael Franks. Waiting For heeft een intiem tikkende, Dance Away (Roxy Music)-achtige, tikkende ritmebox in een sfeervol zwevende ballad, die verpakt is een warme synthesizer deken.

Na de vrolijk huppelende jazzy groover The Urge volgt Legends. Een gestoord kermis-achtige instrumental met een dwars eigengereid geluid, dat af en toe aan Zappa doet denken.

Bestel je Pina Colada alvast maar terwijl je mee deint met de tropische lome groover The Kind Of Fool I’ve Been. JoosTVD klinkt hier als Tony Joe White die zich ook eens aan de latin waagt. Celebe is een zeer breekbare speeldoos-achtige melodie waarin invloeden vanuit de vaudeville en rokerige jazz te vinden xzijn.

A Set Of Delight Knobs is een hoekig stuiterend funky nummer dat gevolgd wordt door de “bijna samba” van het lome Sandals In The Sand. De heupwiegende groover Can’t Own What Fades Away sluit het album af.

Ik probeer het gewoon nog een keer. JoosTVD verdient het om groot te worden. In de tussentijd vermaak ik mij prima met deze nieuwe editie van het Grote Muzikale Avonturenboek van JoosTVD!

The lazy driving and jazzy grooving City of the Mirrorballs betrays influences like Steely Dan and Michael Franks. Waiting for has an intimate ticking, dance away (Roxy Music)--like, ticking rhythmbox in an attractive floating ballad, which is packed a warm synthesizer blanket.

After the cheerful hopping jazzy groover the urge follows legends. A disturbed Kermis-like instrumental with a transverse sound, which is occasionally reminiscent of Zappa.

Order your Pina Colada as well as you are with the tropical Lome Groover the Kind of Fool I've leg. Joostvd sounds like Tony Joe White who also ventures into the Latin. Celebe is a very fragile play box-like melody in which influences from the Vaudeville and smoky jazz can be found. The Sand. The hip -rocking groover can't own what fades away closes the album.

I just try again. Joostvd deserves to grow up. In the meantime, I am great with this new edition of the large musical adventure book by Joostvd!
 

Fab Review from Timpaan Muziek

Surprise, surprise! Another lovely review from this dutch music website, Timpaan Muziek. Very Constructive views on the songs. They were very critical of the 2020 album "Doesn't Ring A Bell", but maybe it helped creating better songs. Who knows?! Well thanks again!

Ook dit jaar is er een nieuwe JoosTVD, Suit yourself. Zijn herkenbare stijl hanteert hij ook op dit album. Jazz, rock, pop en Latijns-Amerikaanse invloeden mengt hij tot een eigenzinnige stijl. De humor houdt de vele virtuoze riffjes in evenwicht.

JoosTVD zegt zelf over het tot stand komen van dit album: “Ik heb ouderwets onderliggende frustraties eruit gegooid. Dat zorgde voor de nodige intensiteit in de songs. Ik werd geïnspireerd door een hoop verzamelde, random oneliner woordvelden, waarmee ik vrij spontaan melodieën kon inkleuren.“

Op Suit yourself heeft hij de vorm van The fly on the wall routine weer teruggevonden. Op titelsong Suit yourself laat JoosTVD horen dat hij alle kanten op stuitert. Leuk zijn de blazersklanken die uit het keyboard komen. De basgitaar met vele syncopes speelt een hoofdrol in de begeleiding. Virtuoos, strakke productie soms druk door de vele lagen maken samen een gelikt geluid.

The buzz heeft een aanstekelijke drive. World of make believe en World of disbelieve maken samen een opmerkelijk tweeluik. Waarbij de eerstgenoemde de beste track van het album is, lijkt de tweede daar vooral de draak mee te steken. Suit yourself en Suit myself hebben een zelfde soort relatie met elkaar.

JoosTVD schotelt de liefhebbers van zijn muziek dit jaar een uitstekend album voor.

 Also this year there is a new JoosTVD, Suit yourself. He also uses his recognizable style on this album. He mixes jazz, rock, pop and Latin American influences into a unique style. The humor keeps the many virtuoso riffs in balance.

JoosYVD himself says about the creation of this album: “I threw out old-fashioned underlying frustrations. That gave the necessary intensity to the songs. I was inspired by a lot of collected, random one-liner word fields, with which I could color melodies quite spontaneously.”

On Suit yourself he has rediscovered the form of The fly on the wall routine. On the title song Suit yourself, JoosTVD shows that he bounces in all directions. The horn sounds that come out of the keyboard are nice. The bass guitar with many syncopes plays a leading role in the accompaniment. Virtuoso, tight production sometimes busy because of the many layers together make a slick sound.

The buzz has an infectious drive. World of make believe and World of disbelieve together make a remarkable diptych. While the former is the best track on the album, the latter seems to make fun of it. Suit yourself and Suit myself have the same kind of relationship with each other.

JoosTVD presents an excellent album to fans of his music this year.

Klankkunstenaar JoosTVD gooide onlangs een nieuwe creatie op het internet. Suit Yourself laat ons meegenieten van een mix aan stijlen; van funk over R&B tot jazz. Als je Joost The Vanished Dutchman voor de eerste maal hoort, kijk je toch wel even raar op. Rijkelijk gelaagde composities die in tijden van minimalisme compleet tegen de stroom ingaan. Altijd straalt er wel enige vrolijkheid uit de songs (ook een rariteit). Eenvoud en mainstream staan (gelukkig) niet in zijn woordenboek. Net zoals Frank Zappa indertijd kent creativiteit geen grenzen. Doch waar Frank soms buitensporig er over ging of symfonische werken durfde componeren, blijft multi- instrumentalist JoosTVD steeds gestructureerd en bevattelijk werk afleveren (ondanks rare sprongen). De funky grooves en de humoristische (bijna theatrale) vondsten behoren ondertussen tot het handelsmerk van de Nederlander. Dat maakt de opvolger van "Just Say Know" gesneden koek voor de fans en voor de musical regisseurs.

Once again JoosTVD with a funky album that entertains en inspires at the same time.

Sound artist JoosTVD recently threw a new creation on the internet. Suit Yourself lets us enjoy a mix of styles; from funk over R&B to jazz. When you hear Joost The Vanished Dutchman for the first time, you will be surprised. Richly layered compositions that go completely against the grain in times of minimalism. There is always some cheerfulness in the songs (also a rarity). Simplicity and mainstream are (fortunately) not in his dictionary. Just like Frank Zappa back then, creativity knows no bounds. But where Frank sometimes went overboard on whether he dared to compose symphonic works, multi-instrumentalist JoosTVD always delivers structured and comprehensible work (despite strange jumps). The funky grooves and the humorous (almost theatrical) finds are now part of the Dutchman's trademark. That makes the successor of 'Just Say Know' a piece of cake for the fans and for the musical directors.
Once again JoosTVD with a funky album that entertains and inspires at the same time.

JoosTVD is misschien ook bekend als “Joost De Verdwenen Nederlander” en heet eigenlijk Joost van Dinther. Hij heeft zichzelf voorgenomen om elk jaar een album uit te brengen met zijn “slaps(t)ick humor” en een mengeling van pop, jazz, funk. Latin en rhythm & blues.

Zijn nieuwe muzikale avontuur werd opgenomen in zijn kleine Kitchensink Studio in Utrecht. Joos krijgt het weer voor elkaar om je van het begin tot het eind van het album ademloos toe te laten luisteren.

Het album opent met de “kromme” latin van Know No Better Way waarin warme samba klanken hand in hand gaan met eigenzinnige geluiden die aan Yello en the Yellow Magic Orchestra doen denken.

Vervolgens stapt Joos over op de loom deinende electrofunk in Meet In The Middle. Een nummer met de warm croonende zang van Joos en uiteraard de nodige eigenzinnigheid, ditmaal doorspekt met Todd Rundgren invloeden.

The Buzz is een luchtig swingend nummer dat doet denken aan de Gruppo Sportivo zijtak the Buddy Odor Stop maar net zo makkelijk ook aan de jazzy klanken van een Ben Sidran of Mose Allison. En daar scheurt Joos dan ook nog eens schroeiend doorheen met een elektrische gitaarsolo. The Cat Gang deint broeierig verder met wederom “kromme” samba klanken waarin Steely Dan dit keer aanwezig is.

Tapdancing Liar is een soort “hink-stap-sprong funk”, die klinkt alsof Ben Sidran de funky hik heeft. Zie hier maar eens op te tapdansen!

De blues duikt op in World Of Make Believe dat bluesy als G. Love klinkt maar dan met de JoosTVD eigenzinnigheid, hetgeen inhoudt dat Joos weer strooit met jazzy en samba klanken.

Van het luchtig swingende Suit Yourself word je automatisch vrolijk. Al was het alleen maar door die Herb Alpert tijuana trompet! Suit Myself is zeer funky, hoekig groovend en met een loom samba gevoel.

King Without Token tintelt, is funky, en mengt Steely Dan, Beck en lo-fi. Wat krijg je als je Van Dyke Parks, Todd Rundgren en Steely Dan met elkaar mixt? De verraderlijk lome deiner World Of Disbelieve.

Het intiem deinende Wise Men doet vervolgens aan Fay Lovsky denken en Joos sluit het avontuur af met de funky fusion van Danser Ou Changez.

Na dit magistrale zeventeende album van JoosTVD kijk ik nu al weer uit naar deel 18!

JoosTVD may also be known as “Joost De Verdwenen Nederlander” and is actually called Joost van Dinther. He has decided to release an album every year with his “slaps(t)ick humor” and a mixture of pop, jazz, funk. Latin and rhythm \u0026 blues.

His new musical adventure was recorded in his small Kitchensink Studio in Utrecht. Joos manages to let you listen breathlessly from the beginning to the end of the album.

The album opens with the “crooked” Latin of Know No Better Way in which warm samba sounds go hand in hand with idiosyncratic sounds reminiscent of Yello and the Yellow Magic Orchestra.

Joos then switches to the languid heaving electrofunk in Meet In The Middle. A song with the warm crooning vocals of Joos and of course the necessary idiosyncrasy, this time interspersed with Todd Rundgren influences.

The Buzz is an airy swinging song that is reminiscent of the Gruppo Sportivo side branch the Buddy Odor Stop but just as easily to the jazzy sounds of a Ben Sidran or Mose Allison. And Joos also rips through it with an electric guitar solo. The Cat Gang sweltering on with yet another “crooked” samba sounds in which Steely Dan is present this time.

Tapdancing Liar is a kind of “hopple-jump funk”, which sounds like Ben Sidran has the funky hiccups. Look at this tap dancing!

The blues pops up in World Of Make Believe that bluesy sounds like G. Love but with the JoosTVD quirkiness, which means that Joos again sprinkles with jazzy and samba sounds.


 The lightly swinging Suit Yourself automatically makes you happy. If only because of that Herb Alpert tijuana trumpet! Suit Myself is very funky, angularly grooving and with a languid samba feeling.

King Without Token tingles, is funky, and mixes Steely Dan, Beck and lo-fi. What do you get when you mix Van Dyke Parks, Todd Rundgren and Steely Dan? The treacherous languid deiner World Of Disbelieve.

The intimate heaving Wise Men then reminds us of Fay Lovsky and Joos concludes the adventure with the funky fusion of Danser Ou Changez.

After this magnificent seventh album by JoosTVD look I'm already looking forward to part 18!

Joos TVD – Doesn’t Ring A Bell

It is an annual ritual. Joos TVD delivers another album. This time for the sixteenth time! And still Joos TVD is not an established name in Dutch pop music. However, I keep insisting to bring it to your attention.

This concerns singer-songwriter Joost van Dinther, also known as the Vanished Dutchman.

At least he has a fan in the British artist Tom Robinson (known from 2-4-6-8 Motorway) because Robinson played a number of Joos song in his radio program on BBC6.

A characteristic of Joos's music is the adventure that resonates in his music in which all kinds of musical examples of Joos crop up.

On his new album Joos clearly has the summer in his head because in almost all songs there is a languid, sunny sound in which I often encountered the sound of Kevin Ayers.

Right in the opening track The Heavy Donut Discount Blues you are already in the Caribbean, rocking your hip with a cocktail in your hand, musing about a heavy donut. Joos sounds like our own Kid Creole here. The cocktail atmosphere lingers in Flower Power Festival, a sultry heaving song with a great Kevin Ayers content, which is not surprising since Ayers also liked a “Caribbean Moon”.
In When U Go Rong, Joos moves to an intimate Spanish village, where a la Kevin Ayers / J.J. Cale release a loom number on us. A song that is so good that it makes you spin. The warming Do It Without Love reminds us of the early work of Todd Rundgren and Fay Lovsky with frolicking keyboard work.
Smart then has a funky 80's wave sound a la Orange Juice with a wonderfully grooving funky bass and a suddenly emerging tear guitar.
Then Joos goes on a sultry cradle tour with the almost bossa nova-like And Again. With Midnight Cowgirl it's time for a grinder. An instrumental song that sounds like a lazy mix of nightclub jazz and “Don't Cry For Me Argentina”.
It remains romantic in the fragile romantic ballad Cold with a beautifully strumming acoustic guitar, which evokes a true After Eight atmosphere. And Joos keeps it cold.
The funkbas returns in Get Your Facts Straight. Funky as Heaven 17 or Talking Heads. U Save Lies also functions more in a sparkling angular way.
After the gracefully floating instrumental ballad To An Inchworm with his melancholy crying synthesizer, Joos closes the album with the absurd ragtime of Over My Very Dead Like. And I have the word on it, Joos. Over my dead body….

Joos TVD again manages to come up with an album that is full of all kinds of musical adventures.

Once again I call on everyone to give this album a try! 

 

Hey, What's Happening....?

Well, I've vanished once again, remember....?  But all for one goal: to bring u the goods. Can't push it though, but again I'm in the middel of this energy flow of making music and there's still a lot to cover from my creative soul I guess! I just had to be patient. After a well deserved break, this time a holiday to one of the most beautiful and interesting places I've seen so far, Sint Petersburg and Moscow, old and new Russia, I'm refilled with a lot of new fresh fuel (no, no wodka), needed to get it together again.

The most happy times are when I'm just working on new songs. I've been upgrading my studio equipment (worksations: the smaller Apollo Twin Quad has replaced my digidesign 003) and it shows. Wow, to me it sounds so much better now. Thanks!

I must admit that I have never heard of multi-instrumentalist / composer / singer Joost van Dinther ('The Vanished Dutchman'). The Fly On The Wall Routine is therefore not his test piece, in fact, it is his fifteenth release. In the 36 minutes that the disc counts, you walk all kinds of musical paths as a listener: funk, fusion, pop, latin, r 'n b, softsoul and jazz, without the whole thing appearing fragmented. All kinds of acts come sailing into your brain, such as Frank Zappa (the sometimes complex song structures and vocals), Gino Vanelli, Steely Dan, Robert Jan Stips and even Gruppo Sportivo in the fun Treason. All this named dropping does not stop the do-it-yourselfer from coming up with strong songs such as the funky opening trio Fly Talk, Stuck and Behave, the nicely lazy Say The Word and perhaps the strongest song, U Know That Now. Strong record of this music survivor.
